We’re proud to announce that Roundabout is supporting the national 165,000 Reasons campaign, calling for action to end the crisis facing children and young people living in temporary accommodation.

Across the UK, it is estimated that more than 165,000 children lack a stable home, facing overcrowding, repeated moves, disrupted education and poorer health outcomes.

The 165,000 Reasons campaign brings together charities including Roundabout, alongside councils, businesses and people with lived experience. Together, they are calling for better conditions in temporary accommodation, faster routes into stable homes and lasting reform.

Young people share their experiences of temporary accommodation

Two of our young people who we have supported, Ayat and Lana, were recently invited to speak at the Local Government Association’s annual conference in Bournemouth.

Working with the 165,000 Reasons campaign and Save the Children, Ayat and Lana shared their first-hand experiences of living in temporary accommodation.

By speaking directly about their experiences, they brought a vital personal perspective to discussions around housing, homelessness and the challenges facing young people without a stable home.

Roundabout Peer Education Co-ordinator Will Shaw said: “Ayat and Lana brought something essential to the discussion at the LGA conference.

“By sharing their experiences directly with council leaders, they helped make sure that the conversation was grounded in the lives of those affected.”

Bringing young people’s voices to the national campaign

At Roundabout, we believe the voices and experiences of young people should be at the heart of conversations about youth homelessness and the changes needed to tackle it.

Our involvement in the 165,000 Reasons campaign brings together our frontline experience of supporting young people across South Yorkshire with the voices of those who understand the challenges of temporary accommodation first-hand.

Roundabout’s work to tackle youth homelessness

Roundabout supports young people who are experiencing, or are at risk of, homelessness across Sheffield and Rotherham.

Through our involvement in the 165,000 Reasons campaign, we are adding our voice to calls for meaningful change for children and young people living in temporary accommodation.

Most importantly, we are helping ensure that young people with lived experience have opportunities to be heard by the people making decisions about housing and homelessness.

By listening to those experiences and combining them with the expertise of organisations working on the frontline, the campaign aims to secure both immediate improvements and lasting change.
