A new music project is giving young people supported by Roundabout the chance to grow in confidence, learn new skills, and connect with others through creativity.

Hosted by RiteTrax – a Sheffield-based music charity that works with marginalised communities – young people have been exploring DJing, songwriting, beat-making and music production.

“They’re creating a sound that’s very laptop-based – heavy Trap and Dubstep beats that they love – which then sparks ideas for lyrics and inspires them to perform their own raps,” says Ben Allen, our Fundraising Officer.

“It’s heartwarming to see someone arrive shy and hesitant, saying they’ll never touch a microphone – and then leave having written and performed a track with the group.”

The project was made possible thanks to generous support from the Tramlines Trust and the Sarah Nulty Power of Music Foundation. Looking ahead, we’re seeking further funding to build on this success and develop a longer-term music programme with RiteTrax.

We’re already seeing the powerful impact music can have. Young people tell us the sessions make them feel more energetic, confident and at ease – a particularly notable outcome for those who often face challenges around social interaction.

Sheffield has a proud musical heritage, especially in electronic and club culture. With sessions taking place at Plot 22, a creative space in the city centre, our young people are DJing on the very same decks that world-renowned electronic artists have used. Here’s to more music-making with RiteTrax, helping young people to find their voice.
