Future Builders

Future Builders is funded by OVO Foundation and is an exciting live-in apprenticeship scheme for young people in Sheffield.

Young people who have a need for housing work alongside professional contractors to renovate neglected houses, which they then live in whilst they study for an apprenticeship.

Future Builders has been designed to:

  1. Address the lack of appropriate move-on options for young people who are at the end of the homelessness pathway
  2. Support young people’s transition from supported housing to independent living and secure employment
  3. Give young people the necessary training to access full-time, sustainable employment at the end of their apprenticeship in order to avoid the cycle of repeat homelessness and address the construction skills gap

“Future Builders has given me the opportunity to gain experience within the building, construction and property refurb industry and has helped me learn more about myself too. Working alongside professionals has really helped me prepare for the world of work and it’s been great feeling like part of a proper team. Future Builders has played a key part in helping me become independent. It has given me the chance to move into an affordable but high quality form of accommodation within the local area and allowed me to learn new skills which in turn has helped me begin a career.” – Scott, Future Builder

The Future Builders Programme

In the programme, we:

  • Provide training and support to get the young person ready for an apprenticeship/work
  • Provide an affordable place to live
  • Help the young person to find a job and get their own place once they’ve finished

The traineeship includes a college based element delivered in partnership with CTS Training, where the young people learn a range of key skills and take part in practice interviews to improve their chances of employment after the programme. They are involved in the renovation of a house and gain some skills of the building trade such as plastering, tiling and redecorating.

The aim of the traineeship is to encourage the young people to gain property renovation skills with the intention of gaining paid work placements or apprenticeships at the end of the programme.

Successful trainees are then able to live in the shared property they have renovated at a reduced rent for 12 months. They receive specialist support from Roundabout to manage their budgets and gain the vital skills they need to live independently, so they are ready to move in to their own accommodation 12 months later.

Build Your Own Future

Roundabout is looking for young people between the ages of 16-24 who have a need for housing to join the programme.  They must be keen to do a 12 month work placement, preferably in the construction industry. They must also be ready to start a 12 week traineeship at CTS Training, be willing to share a house with other Future Builders, be committed to finishing the programme and be looking forward to a bright independent future.
