Sleep Out to End Youth Homelessness

Brave a cold winter night by swapping your bed for a sleeping bag and help raise money to support young homeless people in Sheffield!

We’re appealing to the public and businesses in Sheffield to grab a sleeping bag and help raise thousands of pounds for vulnerable young people in our city.

This year, it will be held at 92 Burton Rd, home of the famous Peddler Night Market. For one night on Friday 24th November, we’re encouraging supporters to take on the challenge and swap their warm beds for a sleeping bag and a hard floor inside the warehouse.

“The Sleep Out is our flagship event and we’re really excited to be at a brand new venue this year at 92 Burton Rd, which many people will recognise as the place where Peddler is held,” explains Ben Keegan, Roundabout’s Chief Executive.

“This year it’s our fortieth birthday, so we’re keen to make it our biggest event yet, as the funds raised will enable us to continue to help vulnerable young people in Sheffield. We aim to not only provide shelter for the young people we support, but also encourage them to build their life skills and their independence. We want to ensure that when they leave our care, they are able to live independently and avoid becoming homeless again in the future.

“An event like this cannot truly replicate what it is like to be lonely, frightened and homeless, but it can help to make a real difference to those many young people who face challenges every day.”

“We’re delighted that the team there are keen to support our charity, and have kindly given us use of the venue free of charge and will be donating all bar profits from the event.”

Heather Gilberthorpe, Director of 92 Burton Rd and Peddler Night Market, says, “Roundabout is a wonderful local charity doing important work in Sheffield to help and support young homeless people.

“There was never any doubt about hosting the Sleep Out here at 92 Burton Rd. We’re part of a really positive creative community and, by hosting events like Peddler, we’re well aware that we’re a very fortunate bunch of people.

“This is an opportunity for us to help support those less fortunate and encourage those who come along to raise as much as they can in sponsorship for a vital cause.”

The event starts at 8pm on Friday 24th November and will end at 7am the next morning. Hosted by Roundabout’s Patron, Paulette Edwards of BBC Radio Sheffield, the first half of the evening will feature games, food and entertainment. From midnight, the really tough challenge begins as participants try to get some sleep.
