Daniel’s Story

Life at the beginning of 2020 was very different for Daniel. Whilst the pandemic has caused difficulties for many people, for Daniel it has been the final stage of him reaching independence and moving forward towards a brighter future.

Daniel had lived at home with his mum since he was young, but struggled with their fractured relationship. Difficulties at home meant that having a normal social life was tough, as was dedicating time to studying, leaving Daniel with very little confidence in himself or his own abilities.

“I didn’t have many friends growing up, and even when I was studying at university, I struggled because things were so difficult at home,” says Daniel.

“I felt really isolated, but all that changed when my work coach at the Job Centre introduced me to the Prince’s Trust.”

Taking part in the Prince’s Trust programme was a turning point for Daniel, giving him a chance to discover new skills and meet new people.

“It was the best experience! I met new friends, learned new skills and it gave me a new focus. I loved every second!”

Daniel was soon introduced to Roundabout’s project in Rotherham, after he expressed a keenness to develop his independence further and learn how to live on his own.

Daniel moved into his new accommodation with Roundabout over lockdown – a period of time that was uncertain for many, but Daniel was happy to be having his fresh start.

“Since being with Roundabout I’ve increased in confidence and have really enjoyed meeting all the staff who can’t do enough to help you. I felt like I could literally discuss anything with them, and they would listen. Moving in there is one of the best things I have ever done.”

Due to Daniel’s quick progress, it was suggested that he move into another service of Roundabout’s, where he’d be living in a shared house with other young people in Sheffield.

Roundabout’s Future Builder project allows young people to help transform a house in need of renovation, before moving into the property themselves.

Whilst the house refurbishment was nearly completed when Daniel moved in, he’s still keen to get stuck into some DIY!

“There are just some finishing touches that need doing, such as attaching cabinet doors in the kitchen, but the Future Builder Co-ordinator, Ray, is going to work with us on that to help us complete it!”

Since moving into this property, Daniel has continued to flourish. He’s learning how to live with other young people, is learning how to maintain his property, and has started a brand new job! Daniel is now a Young Person’s Advisor, working with other young people to help them access employment.

Having a safe and secure place to live as part of the Future Builders scheme has created a solid foundation for Daniel to rebuild his life.

“If it wasn’t for Roundabout, I think I’d still be living at home, feeling isolated and dependent on others. I had no skills, no friends and no way of interacting with anyone. Now I have my own place, housemates and a job that’s perfect for me. I couldn’t be happier.”
